Meadow Oaks Golf & Country Club

by Joe Stine

“Meadow Oaks Golf & Country Club is truly a memorable golf experience, and one you don’t want to miss!”
Meadow Oaks Golf & Country Club is a hidden jewel located in the city of Hudson, Florida. Built in 1984 it still has the mystique of an old Florida golf course. The entire front nine winds through majestic oaks, hence the name Meadow Oaks Golf and Country Club.
As you make your way to the inward nine, water will come into play on seven of the finishing holes. At 6,030 yards from the back tees, the course is not long but nevertheless challenging.
Known for its meticulously maintained fairways and greens, the course provides tournament playing conditions every day. The staff at Meadow Oaks specializes in group outings, and has a dedicated on-site Tournament Coordinator. It has been the location of choice for many prestigious golf events through the years, and the clubhouse is an excellent choice for banquets, meetings, parties, etc.
Meadow Oaks’ designer, golf course architect Bill Amick enjoys a reputation as one of the game’s least “gimmicky” designers. His tees are set widely apart to provide maximum flexibility. Instead of punitive sand and repeaticious do-or-die carries over water his layouts provide generous fairways that emphasize angles of play.

From SR 52 in Hudson, go north on Sugar Creek Blvd. Turn left on Banyan St., then left on Fairwinds Road. Meadow Oaks is 5 ½ miles east of US 19 and 3 ½ miles west of the Suncoast Parkway.

Looking back at the 18th tee from the 18th green.

A fine golfer in his own right, ASGCA Architect William Walker Amick is a Daytona Beach resident and first became interested in golf upon seeing Byron Nelson win the fourth of his incredible streak of 11-consecutive tournaments, in the 1945 Durham Open. He then became a caddie at the Donald Ross-designed Hope Valley Country Club in Durham North Carolina and worked for three of his high school summers on a course maintenance crew at the Alister MacKenzie-routed and Perry Maxwell-finished Ohio State University courses. He has played in state high school championships, the NCAA tournament, and has twice won the ASGCA tourney.
As a teenager and already a low handicap golfer, Bill always dreamed of becoming a golf course architect. He focused on achieving his goal while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and serving as a Graduate Assistant in Turfgrass Management under a USGA Green Section grant. After graduating, one of his primary duties as an Air Force officer was supervising the maintenance and operation of a base golf course. Next, he gained valuable work experience and hands-on training in formal golf course design as an assistant to golf course architects in Indianapolis and Atlanta.
When asked why he made Meadow Oaks a par 70 golf course, Amick said that even though he had plenty of land to work with, he focused on making the course enjoyable, stating, “Colonial, Merion, Pine Valley and Shinnecock Hills all sport a natural par of 70.”
"I want to see smiling golfers on the 18th green!"
This motto best describes Amick's approach to golf course design. Each of the more than 75 new golf courses he has designed in the last four and a half decades reflects his philosophy. This approach to both sculpting new and remodeling existing courses has gained Bill a distinguished reputation with course developers, golf industry professionals, fellow golf course architects and most importantly, golfers!
Amick also said that when Meadow Oaks was being built,

they didn’t have to move an over abundance of dirt, because he incorporated the natural features of the property into the golf course layout. “The property was beautiful and already had a number of ponds and lakes,” commented Amick. “Of course several had to be enlarged or deepened a bit.”
By today’s standards that the quantity of earth that was moved while building Meadow Oaks would be considered conservative. It can also be said that the gentle touch of this master architect is certainly the reason for the mature ambiance of the Meadow Oaks layout.
The routing of the course and the way in which it flows over the distinctive features of the land, is uncomplicated and follows logic. Even with its many stunning elevation changes, compared to most golf courses opened since 1984, the Meadow Oaks design seems fluid, graceful, and understated. However, Meadow Oaks provides more than enough opportunity for a challenging round of golf.
In addition to Amick’s tactfully thought out bunkering, water comes into play on ten holes, and both the front and back nines have solid, challenging holes that provide a generous combination of strategy and beauty.
Meadow Oaks offers a real variety of holes, with some meandering through the artfully landscaped community while other are isolated by the natural wildlife habitat.
Thick with indeginous oaks the front nine are all classic golf holes. The par four 8th Hole, in particular, makes its presence felt in the golfer’s mind from the moment he or she steps onto the 8th teeing area. Though only 325-yard (from the back tees) its heart pounding tee shot over water to a slightly uphill fairway make it a more than a wee bit intimidating.

The Meadow Oaks Golf & Country Club Scorecard
The back nine Meadow Oaks Golf & Country Club is also exhilarating, with each hole more exciting and beautiful than the previous. On the great, opportunistic 14th, a 545-yard par five, drives will roll considerably as the slight dogleg right fairway drops toward a green that is protected by a bunker on the left.
Two more solid, striking holes lead you to the heroic 17th hole. This 545-yard (from the back tees) par five doglegs sharply left around a lake. The tee shot is slightly downhill and the extra yardage this provides is much needed for the heart pounding second shot. A successful drive on this hole, leaves a mid-iron shot that must cut a corner of the lake to a green that extends precariously, near the water. There is absolutely no room to miss left, and the bailout on the right is no picnic either, with the high lip of its sculpted bunker.
The 290-yard par four, last hole takes the round home, culminating with a carry shot over a leg of wetland to the well guarded 18th green, which is bracketed by trees on the left and heavy bunkering on the right.
Meadow Oaks’ competitively priced green fees are considered a real golf value among the locals around the Tampa Bay area. With impeccable playing conditions and extraordinary customer service, Meadow Oaks Golf & Country Club is truly a memorable golf experience, and one you don’t want to miss!
